The volcano has stopped

Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 May 2010
It seems that the volcano, Eyjafjallajokull, has stopped erupting. Experts have been flying over the volcano and examining it and there seems to be no activity. Geologists say that earthquake readings confirm that the activity has come to a stop.

This is good news at it was causing the Icelandic tourism to fall down dramatically which is really sarcastic as it should really have had the opposite effect as there is no danger to people as some might think. We expect that tourism will increase again, especially as now tourists can go and see the newly formed lava and volcano which should be a very special experience not available in many places.

Iceland Volcano

Print E-mail
Thursday, 25 March 2010
A volcano in Iceland is erupting. Here we have a number of videos from this newest volcanic activity in Iceland. This volcano last erupted 1821 or just under 200 years ago. Now it has ripped a one km long fissure in the ground between two of Icelandīs best known glaciers, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull.

Approx. 500 people were evacuated for security reasons but no real threat is imminent though as it is far from any towns or habitable areas. It is however giving trouble to air traffic as ash is especially hazardous to airplanes.

This time this volcano erupted between the glaciers as said above and that makes the situation less severe as if it would have been below one of the glaciers you would get floods and more explosive activity due to the fire and ice not liking each other too much:)

Here below are some videos from the eruption, I hope you like it:

And finally here is a link to Reuters video, they seem to NOT want others to embed their videos: Reuters video

The warmest and driest July in Reykjavik

Print E-mail
Tuesday, 04 August 2009
The month of July was the sunniest, warmest and dryest month in Reykjavik for a long time. It was the driest since 1886 and the 4th warmest since beginning of measuring.

Now it is raining for the first time but the temperature is still around 15-17 degrees. As said before the summer in Iceland is usually with temperatures between 13-20°C. Everything over 16°C is considered warm.

Now August has begun and we often have good days or weeks there as well. More on that later in the month.

There will be coming a lot of extra material about Reykjavik and Iceland on this website during August. We will be taking pictures and videos that will be put up here and I personally look forward to publishing this.

Until later... Rgds, ReykjavikHotel.net

The biggest travel weekend in Iceland

Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 July 2009
Next weekend, the first weekend in August, is the biggest local travel weekend of the year. This weekend, called in Icelandic, Verslunarmannahelgin, translates badly and roughly to English as the Shopkeepers or Commerce-people weekend. It means originally that everybody working in shops got a holiday on the Monday after. That meant that a long weekend in the country was the logical choice. Now it is a holiday weekend that everyone has the ability to go for, whatever profession or business section they adhere to. (not everybody does go of course).

In this weekend many planned events are all over the country. If you decide to go, be careful to choose the right event as this is a party weekend with a lot of very wild and crazy partyplaces in between. Strictly family friendly and alcohol free events are also available. Something for everybody is available for this weekend. Also in the city there are planned events for those who donīt like to sleep in a tent and are more of a city creature.

Great weather in Reykjavik

Print E-mail
Friday, 24 July 2009
Reykjavik has been enjoying an especially good weather last few weeks. It might not seem much in most other cities, but in Reykjavik 20°C is warmer than usual. Sun, warm weather and a difficult winter has made the past few weeks very enjoyable in Reykjavik and many companies allow people to leave work early to enjoy the summer.

Tourism is blooming now as the local currency has plummeted in the current economic crash. All of the sudden, Iceland which was considered one the most expensive cities in the world, is now considered to be cheap. Many people come to shop only and make great deals. The Icelandic people also welcome the tourists with open arms, both due to the famous Icelandic hospitality and because it is a win-win deal. The visitors get deals and the Icelandic nation gets foreign currency to strengthen itīs financial situation and help fighting the economic catastrophe.
